Welcome to our classroom at Red Cedar Elementary School. I am delighted to have the opportunity to teach this wonderful class of fifth graders.
My career in elementary education has been exciting and challenging. I have had the privilege of teaching many students from first grade all the way to fifth. I don't know that I have a favorite grade to teach, but I sure enjoy teaching older elementary students. I attended Salem College in Winston-Salem with the goal of studying vocal performance and the dream of singing at the Metropolitan Opera House. I completed my B.A. in History at Georgia State University (1996). I completed my M.A. in Elementary Education at Gardner-Webb University (2007) in Boiling Springs, NC. I had the good fortune to complete my student teaching and teach for ten years with amazing mentor teachers and administrators at Elizabeth Elementary School/Shelby Intermediate School in Shelby, NC.
My family relocated to South Carolina where I found a terrific educational and professional fit. I continued on the path of life-long learning by earning a Doctorate Degree from the University of South Carolina. I conducted research on the effects of experiential, outdoor education in science instruction.
Most of my classroom stories involve my favorite environmental scientist and welder, and outdoor enthusiast, Jack (HHIHS graduate) and world traveling, ice cream scooper, Virginia. Wilbur is our silly pug who sings opera and show tunes with me. Kitty has not made us aware of any special talents. My favorite activities include hiking, yoga, and photography. I want to hike the Appalachian Trail with my kids. Peanut M&M's and murder mystery books are my weakness. Michael Connelly is the best thriller writer. Ever.
